My experience in the wilderness began while growing up in the South Georgia
swamps, when my father and I hunted wood ducks. While completing college, my
love of nature took me to northern California, where I lived in a hollowed
out redwood stump for a year.I sailed to Alaska in 1979 aboard a 150 foot square rigged vessel named the
Regina Maris. As I sailed north past the ancient green forests and gazed up
at the snow capped mountains, I felt content. After finishing a math degree, I lived simply above the
Arctic Circle during 1984, working as a home school teacher in the small, isolated
community of Coldfoot. At that point in my life, I decided that simply existing and appreciating
wilderness was not enough; I wanted to contribute to society by becoming a
physician. I returned to Georgia, completed my medical education, and
settled in Haines, Alaska, a beautiful community of 2,000 people in
southeast Alaska, where I have lived for the past fifteen years.I love my balanced life here. Place, community, family, friends, small town
medicine, and a semi-subsistence lifestyle all contribute to my happiness.
Through my work, I am able to give of myself to my patients and each day
they magically give back to me by sharing a smile or a unique perspective on
the world. Through subsistence, I gain great satisfaction from growing,
gathering, and hunting for much of my family’s food. I love planting seeds,
pulling up shrimp pots, picking berries, fishing, and hunting.Hunting takes me deepest into the wilderness, where I feel most at home. I
am happy to share the experiences that have brought me great joy and peace
with others through Women Hunting.

Additionally, I work as an assistant hunting guide and have the website: www. womenhuntingalaska.com
