My husband has a bumper sticker that proudly says, “Hunt with your children, not for them.”  Most of us have practiced this slogan in our daily lives and take every opportunity to not only teach outdoor skills to our own children but others as well.

Author Casey McCall Corbett has taken this one step further in her new children’s book, “Lost in the Great Swamp, Book One in the Adventures with Scout.”  “Lost” tells the adventures of Lucy and Michael and their new Brittany puppy, Scout.  Scout provides lots of fun as well as putting her life on the line protecting the children during a terrifying night lost in the great Ohoopee Swamp.  The book is filled with outdoor tips as told by Grandpa, a retired Wildlife Biologist for the State of Georgia – dog training tips, gun safety, being a responsible hunter and survival skills.  Grandpa teaches the kids during camping trips by providing facts on local Indians as well as the history of the Ohoopee Swamp.  Conservation is included as well as reasons for the decline in many species and the benefits that hunters provide for conservation.    There is also a chapter detailing a Hunter Education Class that Lucy and Scout helped teach.  The book is filled with humorous details as well - much to Grandma’s dismay – like when  Lucy catches a frog which escapes during the church service!  All in an easy to read format that will hold the child’s attention.

Author Casey McCall Corbett began hunting at an early age and admits that she started because she was jealous when her father and brother came home with great stories of their adventures afield.  Casey understands that the future of our outdoor sports and heritage rests with educating the younger generation.  She believes children that are exposed to outdoor stories early in life will help to combat much of the anti-hunting and fishing information that is on television and in our public schools.

“Lost in the Great Swamp” definitely achieved her goal.  If you are looking for a great gift for that young person contact Casey at wiregrassframes@alltel.net.   I am certainly looking forward to the next installment in the “Adventures with Scout.”
