Taxidermy as an art form has been around for many years and new techniques are invented all the time to make mounts more interesting. Good taxidermists are always looking for the newest ideas to make what goes on your wall fresh and exciting. Instead of just a plain shoulder mount, how about a fountain with a moose picking its head up from a pond with grass and water trickling out of its mouth? How about a flock of snow geese flying overhead in your den? Getting creative with your mount enables you to make a statement and conversation piece out of it and allows you to tell your hunting story even better.
My 12 year old son, Tony, shot his first deer, a Florida Whitetail doe, which incidentally was also the first animal he chose to mount. This is a small deer and might have been lost as a shoulder mount on a wall full of large Colorado Mule deer, but he chose to mount it on a pedestal with simple vegetation, showcasing the fine details of its features.
To show the majesty and size of an Alaskan Timber Wolf it was mounted in a standing pose and rose over 6 feet. We put it on the sidewalk in front of our shop, and it halted traffic on the highway as people stopped to take photos.
The bobcat wall mount could have just been a rug, and the foxes as well, but having them mounted as shown evokes a sense of walking in the woods looking into their environment.
By putting the Rocky Mountain bighorn on a simple but elegant pedestal, takes it from a plain shoulder mount to a grand entryway statement.
Jeremy Sage of Sportsman’s Warehouse, took a once in a lifetime hunting trip and bagged several of New Zealand’s trophies. They have been mounted and arranged as a group to emphasize their place of origin and this particular hunt, but this grouping can also be separated to fit into other places throughout the home.
There is even a wallaby from Jeremy’s New Zealand hunt holding a basket that evokes a chuckle by each man who sees it, as it holds every man’s favorite tool, his TV remote!
Be creative as you think of ways to make your next mount stand out and look unique; discuss your ideas with your taxidermist. If he is game, you should walk out of his or her studio with a one of a kind piece of art, that will make you proud for years to come.
